A sophisticated scam targeting UK renters is stealing both deposit money and personal identities.

How the Scam Works

Scammers list highly desirable properties on legitimate platforms at slightly below-market rent. They request a 'holding deposit' and a full set of ID documents (passport, bank statements) before a viewing.

The Double Hit

Not only do victims lose their deposit, but the scammers use the provided ID documents to open credit accounts in the victim's name.

How to Protect Yourself

Never send money or full ID documents before physically viewing a property and verifying the landlord or letting agent via the official register.
